Marketing with the metaverse – business’s new frontier
The next big thing starts with M. Everyone’s been talking about the next big breakthrough in technology. It’s the Metaverse — defined as a series of shared virtual environments which people can access via the internet — where they can socialize, work and play. With the pandemic, many brands have had to find creative ways to market online and many brands have already jumped on this trend and used it in their marketing. Many have recreated their services or built branded characters or arenas within games, natively inserting themselves within an experience rather than interrupting it like an advertisement does. Two games in particular, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Fortnite, have become very popular for branded content.

Sentosa Island in Animal Crossing

Sentosa Crossing, was a digital replica of the Singapore’s southern recreational destination on Nintendo Switch’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Sentosa Crossing is a really good case study on how hotel and tourist development groups can not only continue its publicity and branding during this travel drought, but also continually stay relevant with the younger generations. By recreating this physical destination into a virtual one, this was one of the earlier efforts into marketing with the metaverse.

Verizon’s Super Bowl stadium in Fortnite

Verizon’s campaign brought the Raymond James stadium to life in Fortnite to provide fans a safe way to enjoy the Super Bowl amidst the pandemic. The virtual stadium, was able to fit 50 people in the game lobby simultaneously, allowing them to participate in virtual meet-and-greets with avatars of NFL players, including JuJu Smith-Schuster of the Pittsburgh Steelers and DeAndre Hopkins of the Arizona Cardinals– giving players the chance to meet avatars of NFL players, in a stunt Verizon claimed "showed off what 5G can do”.

The next step forward

This marketing really opens up what the metaverse can do for brands, allowing for advertising to be an attractive experience rather than disruptive. It’s also highlighted the growing need for rapid development and installation of necessary technology such as high-speed internet infrastructure. At True Digital Park, we’re future facing and ready for the future of the internet. 5G is accessible throughout the park, and True 5G has recently signed IMMA, a world-class Metaversified Brand Ambassador.

True Digital Park is Southeast Asia's largest tech and startup hub, spanning over 200,000 sqm. The park is a critical driver for the development of the startup and innovation ecosystem in Thailand.
