Some things about living in Bangkok are hard to explain until you experience them yourself. The quiet social cues. The gentle ways people communicate. The little cultural moments that make you pause and think, this is very Thailand.
That was the idea behind the first Coffee Talk: Unlocking Your Bangkok Life: Thailand Only, where expats, founders, and professionals gathered for a relaxed outdoor coffee session at stof.coffee. Hosted by Nomad Nomadness in collaboration with the Bangkok Startup Association, the event created a casual space for people building their lives in Bangkok to meet others, share stories, and grow the expat community together.
The theme “Thailand Only” focused on those uniquely Thai cultural moments that many newcomers only understand after living and working here for a while.
The conversation with Billy van der Loo and Nikon J. Gormley, moderated by Natcha Charoenwai, felt more like an easy coffee chat than a formal talk.
The conversation drifted into topics many people living in Bangkok eventually face:
• Moments that caught you off guard
• Workplace dynamics that felt different from back home
• Subtle cultural cues you learned the hard way
• Small social details that suddenly made everything easier
One topic that stood out was how relationships work in Thailand. As one speaker shared, “Sometimes when you meet a client here, the conversation begins with something simple like asking if someone has eaten yet. It is a small way people show care.”
The discussion also touched on communication styles. Thai people often notice tone, body language, and small details in conversations. At the same time, keeping the interaction smooth matters. As one insight from the talk explained, “Even when feedback feels negative, many Thai people will simply say ‘It’s okay.’”
What started as a morning coffee turned into open conversations and new connections among Bangkok’s growing expat community.
Hello! Let’s stay tuned for the next Coffee Talk to see what topic we explore next as the community continues to grow.
